We’re not strangers to a scare or two when it comes to our triplets. Premature babies are seriously fragile things, you so much as sneeze in their direction and you’re asking for trouble. Even when they’re a few months old they’re not quite as physically developed as similarly aged babies.

Whatever you call them – we call them prams – there are a surprising number of different ones on the market that can carry three babies. The trouble is, out of necessity I suppose, they’re all pretty big. So big, in fact, that as far as we could work out not a single one of them would fit inside the boot of our 2016 Toyota Prius.
The changes come thick and fast when you begin to quadruple in size. Here’s my handy guide to what a pregnant-with-triplets mum can expect to lose, based on what I saw my wife lose as she progressed through her pregnancy.
After months of preparing ourselves mentally for the arrival of triplets (that’s what bedrest allows you to do), we were acutely aware that we’d be spending considerable time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with our girls. It was not a question of “if”, it was a question of “how long”.
First thing I did when I found out we were expecting triplets was to explore the depths of the internet for women that had gone through the same thing. Needless to say that if you’re reading this then you’ve done the same thing with the same result.
We received the news on 16 November. A flurry of hospital appointments followed and it was quickly drummed into us that this would be a complicated pregnancy, with additional risks thrown into the mix because two of the three babies were identical twins and thus were sharing a placenta. We were told to expect that my wife would require complete bed rest from late-December/early-January.
Words that changed our lives forever. My wife was laid on the examining table with her stomach exposed, and I was sat to the side nervously fumbling with my hands. This will be a familiar scenario for anyone who’s ever been expecting, familiar too for us as this wasn’t our first pregnancy, but today we had an additional worry as we’d previously been informed that my wife was expecting twins. We arrived at hospital hopeful that this latest scan wouldn’t find anything for us to be concerned about.
